Description |
Hurricane Helene has significantly impacted operations at NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). The NCEI generates and provides Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST), an ancillary product which is used as an input for both MODIS and VIIRS cloud products (MxD06, MxD35, MODIS & VIIRS CLDMASK*, CLDPROP*, and VIIRS Dark Target (AERDT) products) from NRT and Standard streams. This OISST product has not been produced by NCEI since September 27 (the last file was received was on September 26) as their systems are still down. The Standard and NRT Cloud products are being generated, but by using the last available OISST data. We do not have any estimate on when the production of this data will resume, and till that happens, the MODIS and VIIRS cloud retrieval algorithms will continue to use the last available data, with potential impact on cloud retrieval quality. |
